BCHPCA Services

Policy & Knowledge Transfer:

    A significant part of the work of the BCHPCA is to inform policy and facilitate the exchange of knowledge among its members and policy makers. Additionally, we host consultations and meetings with interest holders, including the government, and partners to ensure positive and impactful outcomes to the sector and the public.

    Our work includes the following;

    • Creation of an issues toolkit before elections and briefings for public policy discussions
    • Publication of an annual BC Fact Sheet, a collection of current statistics and knowledge of hospice palliative care in BC and the Yukon which can be used to inform decision-makers at hospices, community, and government-funded programming.

    Public Awareness and Health Care System Navigation:

    The staff and board of BCHPCA along with its members provide education, services, and guidance to the public on end-of-life supports, palliative care, grief and bereavement, and psychosocial support.

    Inquiries regarding services available in BC and the Yukon are supported by BCHPCA staff by providing inquiry navigation to those seeking resources, information and guidance. BCHPCA receives approximately 1100 inquiries a year via social media, email, mail, telephone, and during events. They play a critical role within the community and sector.

    Among the services we offer are;

    • Updating and maintaining the BCHPCA website with new evidence-based information as a vital resource for the public, healthcare professionals and policy makers
    • Assisting individuals with navigating the hospice/palliative health care system, via our information and referral services.
    • Fulfilling public speaking and media relations requests and providing speakers to community events and sector meetings, including conferences, seminars, and public speaking engagements.
    • Developing and implementing public awareness/education campaigns

    Education and Training:

    BCHPCA provides education and training services to its members, the community, and the healthcare industry.

    In terms of education and training, we aim to provide a forum for thought-provoking discussions, learning as well as a method for caregivers and patients to engage with interdisciplinary teams in order to allow cross pollination of ideas.
    BCHPCA strives to become an equitable, accessible organization; therefore, if special requirements, such as financial support, are required for public or underserved communities in order to gain access to our events, we do our best to accommodate the needs of individuals.

    Some of our events include the following:

    • Annual Hospice Education Days
    • Bi-annual Lunch and Learn webinars and training session series with timely topics such as grief, bereavement, caregiver support, multidisciplinary education, MAiD, advocacy and so much more
    • Co-development of educational materials targeted for members and the general public, including vulnerable populations.

    Membership Support and Sector Development:

    Our efforts to facilitate the growth of the sector include providing the following support to ensure sustainability, expansion, and development. Hospice and palliative care should reflect this to attract more healthcare professionals in light of the aging population and the growing need for grief, bereavement, and community access to care. Educating, supporting, and advocating for hospice societies continuously allows policy makers and funders to be aware of trends and needs and make informed decisions regarding policies that will affect the community.

    BCHPCA is involved in the following activities;

    • Provides fund and operational development assistance to members
    • Access to resources, networking, and best practices for hospice palliative care as well as grief and bereavement
    • Compilation of informed, evidence-based reports around hospice capacity, research and grief, bereavement, and mental health.

    The BC Hospice Palliative Care Association (BCHPCA) recognizes the traditional land of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples who have walked before us and minded the lands we now call home for time immemorial. Hospice Societies have been able to support, aid and care for many people on these same lands.

    The BCHPCA Offices are located on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and TsleilWaututh Nations.
