Following British Columbia’s provincial election, the BC Hospice Palliative Care Association congratulates the incoming Conservative Party to government and all newly elected and returning members of the Legislative Assembly. We thank outgoing representatives for their dedication and work in public service.
As the government transition proceeds, our focus remains clear: people facing serious illness, dying and bereavement need dependable support closer to home.
Across British Columbia, community hospice societies bring skilled staff, trained volunteers and trusted local relationships to this work. They support individuals and families, help caregivers navigate difficult circumstances, and provide grief and bereavement services that extend well beyond the end of life.
BCHPCA’s role is to connect and strengthen this community-based network through provincial advocacy, shared learning, resources and evidence. Our members deliver local services; the Association helps bring their collective experience and needs into provincial planning.
The incoming government’s commitments and plans to home care choice and rural access provide an opportunity to discuss how hospice societies can contribute. Building on existing community capacity deserves consideration as part of an accessible, sustainable health system.
During the transition, BCHPCA will seek early engagement on three priorities:
-
Recognizing community hospice societies as partners in home and community care planning.
-
Strengthening sustainable support for hospice, caregiver, grief and bereavement services.
-
Ensuring provincial decisions reflect local experience, including rural and remote communities.
We will continue working constructively and nonpartisanly with government, elected representatives and health system partners. We will share confirmed developments with members as appointments and policy decisions become clear.
The election marks a change in government. The need for compassionate, coordinated community care continues.
