The Government of Yukon has announced the implementation of Heidi Health, an AI-powered clinical documentation support tool, across several government-operated clinics. The initiative aims to enhance care delivery, reduce administrative burden for clinicians and improve the overall patient experience.
Heidi Health functions as an AI medical scribe that supports real-time documentation during patient appointments. With patient consent, the platform transcribes conversations and generates structured clinical notes, allowing clinicians to focus more fully on care interactions while maintaining accurate documentation. All notes are reviewed and approved by clinicians before being added to the official medical record.
In addition to transcription, the platform supports customizable templates and can generate documents such as referral letters, care plans and patient summaries from consultation notes. The tool also supports multilingual documentation and can be used in both virtual and in-person care settings. These features are designed to streamline workflow, improve consistency in documentation and reduce time spent on administrative tasks.
The technology is being introduced at multiple sites, including Centre de santé Constellation Health Centre, Dawson City Medical Clinic, Whitehorse Walk-In Clinic, the Yukon Healthy Living Program and the Yukon Midwifery Program. The Government of Yukon notes that the platform meets Canadian privacy and security requirements, and privacy and security assessments have been completed.
This initiative reflects the territory’s commitment to exploring innovative approaches to care delivery, strengthening clinician capacity, and improving access to services across geographically diverse communities.
Administrative workload and documentation demands are frequently identified as pressures within hospice and palliative care settings, particularly in community-based and interdisciplinary care models. Tools that support real-time documentation may help clinicians spend more time with patients and families, support more coordinated care and improve continuity across providers.
AI-supported documentation platforms may also support improved communication across settings, including home, hospice and community programs and collaboration. As health regions explore innovative approaches to workforce sustainability and care delivery, emerging technologies such as AI medical scribes may offer opportunities to enhance clinician capacity while maintaining patient-centred care.
