Hospices support the diverse psychosocial needs of their communities through a diversity of services and in a variety of settings including in-home, long-term care homes, hospitals, assisted living residences, and many other care environments. They also run education programs for the general public to raise awareness and knowledge of the benefits of hospice care and how to access these services when needed. Nearly 80% of these services are delivered by a core team of skilled volunteers.

• Alternate Therapies (Non-traditional forms of therapy including physical and occupational therapies such as music, art, and aromatherapy)

• Symptom management

• Community Hospice (In-home client care)

• Palliative Care Beds (A home-like environment for clients that provides hospice palliative care services by an interprofessional palliative care team)

• Advance Care Planning Services (Guided process where clients with their loved ones contemplate their values and examine their health to develop formal or informal instructions about their future care)

Experts in Grief & Bereavement

Hospice Palliative Care Societies across BC have been providing grief and bereavement services as a core component of their standards of practice. With over 40 years of providing grief and bereavement support within their communities, our hospices are experts in providing person- and family-centered care before and after a loss, as well as throughout an individual’s illness or grief journey. On average, grief and bereavement services represent 82% of hospice services delivered within BC. These services are currently not funded, requiring hospice societies to fundraise to meet the needs of their communities. 

Hospice Societies: Providing Integral Palliative Care Service 

We are facing an important demographic shift in the coming years that will lead to growing demands for hospice care. By 2036, one-quarter of the BC’s residents will be over the age of 65. Our Hospice Societies will continue to play an integral role in helping to meet the increased demands and current gaps in the system, which have been further fueled by COVID-19. Together, let’s raise awareness of all of the important services that hospices deliver to all people in all of our communities and the supportive role they play in this impactful shift.

How to Bloom Your Wildflowers in Honour of Hospice Societies 

The All Perennial Wildflower Mix is made up of 15 non-invasive species of perennials that will provide many colors for years of enjoyment. When fall-planted, the flowers will blossom the following spring. When spring-planted in ideal conditions, there will be some flowering but most will flower the following spring. The advantage of spring or summer planting is the plants have a well-established root system for the following spring. This mix will grow to a height of approximately 36-70 inches.
